May 9—A man was killed and an Illinois State Police trooper was injured in exchange of gunfire on Interstate 64 near Mount Vernon early Tuesday, police said. Load Error Gunfire was exchanged at about 3 a.m. between a suspect and troopers after an "altercation occurred and the male suspect displayed a firearm. Illinois State Police Troop 10 troopers had responded to a motorist assist call at Milepost 72 on eastbound I-64 in Jefferson County, according to preliminary information released by police.
